Breaking the Barriers of Silence with the Power of Learning

Name: Sopan Maruti Walunj

Age: 55

Village: Thakur Pimpri, Chakan Block, Khed, Dist. Pune

Lifelong Challenges

Sopan Maruti Walunj has faced hearing and speech difficulties since childhood. Due to these challenges, his parents were unable to enroll him in school, believing formal education would not be possible. Consequently, Sopan remained illiterate for most of his life, unable to perform basic reading, writing, or mathematical tasks.

This lack of literacy created daily difficulties, particularly managing simple calculations and handling currency. Sopan was dependent on others, especially his wife, for basic activities.

URMEE Adult Literacy Programme

When the URMEE team introduced the Adult Literacy Programme in Thakur Pimpri, Sopan expressed interest. Initially hesitant due to communication challenges, consistent motivation from URMEE facilitators, Preraks, and peer learners encouraged regular attendance.

Family Support: Sopan’s wife, who also never had formal education, joined the classes. She played a crucial role, explaining concepts through gestures and actions, making learning effective for both.

Remarkable Progress

Over time, Sopan’s participation and enthusiasm grew. He learned to recognize numbers, perform basic mathematical operations, and identify currency denominations. This progress boosted his confidence, enabling independent everyday activities.

Empowering Inclusive Communities

Sopan’s journey highlights the transformative impact of adult literacy initiatives on individuals previously excluded from education. His determination demonstrates how inclusive opportunities empower persons with disabilities, promote self-reliance, and build inclusive communities.

Sopan’s story proves education transcends barriers, showcasing the power of community support, family partnership, and persistent effort in creating lasting change.
